One of the main reasons F1 engines are able to rev so high is inherent in their design. Relatively low displacement, but TWICE the number of cylinders. Therefore making the pistons smaller, lighter, and able to achieve very high speeds. Small bore and short stroke are offset by adding more cylinders. Also notice how with the use of V8's now they are not revving to 25k rpm for this very reason. The engines are roughly the same displacement, but 8 vs 12 cylinders means the pistons are bigger and therefore can't wind up as high. Good luck seeing similar results with the VG...
